How to knit Relief Stripes:
Work with a multiple of 4 stitches + 1 + 2 edge stitches.
Cast on 15 stitches (4 stitches 3 times + 1 + 2 edge sts) and work according to chart.
The chart shows Right Side rows and Wrong Side rows.
The numbers at right edge of chart indicate Right Side rows, and at left edge Wrong Side rows.
Read Right Side rows from right to left, Wrong Side rows from left to right.
The pattern repeat = 4 stitches wide.
Abbreviation:
k: Knit
p: Purl
yo: yarn over
k2tog: knit 2 stitches together as one
skpo: slip 1 stitch as if to knit, knit 1 and pass the slipped stitch over the knitted stitch
slip wyif: slip 1 pwise, leave yarn at front of work
Written Instructions:
Row 1 (right side): edge st, * p2, k1, p1 *; repeat from * to *; end with p1, edge st.
Row 2 (wrong side): edge st, k1, * k1, p1, k2 *; repeat from * to *; end with edge st.
Row 3: edge st, * p2, make 3 stitches (K1, yo, K1) into 1 stitch, p1 *; repeat from * to *; end with p1, edge st.
Row 4: edge st, k1, * k1, slip wyif, p1, slip wyif, k2 *; repeat from * to *; end with edge st.
