Written Instructions:
Begin with the front.
Cast on 104 stitches and work 10 rows in double moss stitch.
Then distribute the stitches as follows: 10 stitches in double moss stitch for the edge, 84 stitches in checkerboard stitch, 10 stitches in double moss stitch for the edge.
On wrong-side rows, work the stitches as they appear.
At a total height of 44 cm (17¼ in), ending with a checkerboard square, shape the neckline by binding off the central 12 stitches, then at each inner edge bind off 5 stitches once, 4 stitches once, 3 stitches once, 2 stitches once, and 1 stitch once. There will be 31 stitches left for each shoulder.
At 58 cm (22¾ in) total height, ending with a checkerboard square, place markers at both sides.
Work the left shoulder, then cast on 42 stitches to shape the back neckline and work the 31 stitches of the second shoulder, for a total of 104 stitches again for the back.
Maintain the distribution of the stitches and from the markers work the same number of rows as for the front.
Then work 9 rows in double moss stitch and bind off all stitches loosely in pattern.
Finishing:
For the neckband, pick up 44 stitches along the back neckline edge on the right side with US size 8 (5 mm) needles.
Work 7 rows in double moss stitch and bind off all stitches loosely in pattern.
On the right side pick up 80 stitches along the front neckline edge and work in the same way.
Sew the side seams of the neckband.
Overlap the side edges of the vest, placing the front edges over the back edges, and sew 3 buttons on each side, fastening both layers together.
