Vest in a Check Pattern
How to knit a vest in a check pattern:
Size: US 8 / UK 10.
Materials:
400 g yarn (50% acrylic and 50% polyester, 219 yds [200 m]/100 g). Straight needles size US 10½ (UK 3) – 6.5 mm. Circular needles size US 10½ (UK 3) – 6.5 mm, 24 in (60 cm) long.
Ribbing Pattern 1/1: Knit 1, * purl 1, knit 1, repeat from *.
Check Pattern:
Work following the chart, which shows only right-side rows.
On wrong-side rows, work stitches as they appear, purl the yarn overs.
In height, work once rows 1–14, then repeat continuously rows 3–14.
Gauge: 18 stitches x 24 rows = 4 x 4 in (10 x 10 cm).
Back:
Cast on 77 stitches and work in check pattern.
When work measures 19 in (48 cm) from the beginning, bind off all stitches.
Front:
Cast on 77 stitches and work in check pattern.
When work measures 10¼ in (26 cm) from the beginning, for the neckline bind off the central stitch and continue each side separately.
At the neckline edge bind off 1 stitch every 4th row, 12 times.
When work measures 19 in (48 cm) from the beginning, bind off all stitches.
Finishing:
Sew the shoulder seams.
With circular needles, pick up 135 stitches along the neckline edge from the right side and work in ribbing pattern 1/1.
At the central stitch of the front, make a double decrease: slip 2 stitches together as if to knit, knit the next stitch as it appears, then pass the slipped stitches over. Work this decrease in every row.
When the band measures 1½ in (4 cm), bind off.
With circular needles, pick up 150 stitches along each side edge from the right side and work in ribbing pattern 1/1.
When the bands measure 1½ in (4 cm), bind off.
Overlap the lower edges of the side bands of the back over the side bands of the front and sew in place.
With circular needles, pick up 160 stitches along the lower edge of the vest from the right side and work in ribbing pattern 1/1.
At the overlapped side bands pick up stitches through both layers together.
When the band measures 2¾ in (7 cm), bind off.
