Top-Down Lace Yoke Top
Size: US 10–12 / UK 14–16
Materials:
400 g of yarn (100% mercerized cotton, 278 yards per 125 g); one circular knitting needle, US size 4 (3.5 mm), 32 inches (80 cm) long.
Stockinette stitch: knit all stitches in right-side rows, purl all stitches in wrong-side rows.
Garter stitch: knit all stitches in all rows (or purl all stitches in all rows).
Lace Pattern:
Work according to the chart, which shows only right-side rows.
On wrong-side rows, purl all stitches and yarn overs.
Begin with the stitches before the repeat, repeat the section between * and *, and end with the stitches after the repeat.
Yoke: Work according to the chart.
Gauge:
in stockinette stitch: 22 stitches x 31 rows = 4 x 4 inches (10 x 10 cm) using US size 4 (3.5 mm) needles.
Front and Back are worked in one piece in the round from the top down.
When working in the round, mark the beginning of the round with a stitch marker to keep your place.
Begin at the neckline.
Cast on 144 stitches on the circular needle, join in the round, and work in stockinette stitch.
After 1¼ inches (3 cm) from the cast-on edge, begin working the lace yoke according to the chart, repeating the stitch pattern between * and * 18 times across the round.
Work the last 2 rows of the yoke as follows:
42 stitches in garter stitch, 84 stitches in the lace pattern according to the last 2 rows of the chart, 42 stitches in garter stitch, 84 stitches in the lace pattern according to the last 2 rows of the chart.
After completing the chart, shape the armholes as follows:
Bind off 41 stitches, work 7 stitches in stockinette stitch, 73 stitches in lace pattern from the chart, 7 stitches in stockinette stitch,
bind off 41 stitches, work 7 stitches in stockinette stitch, 73 stitches in lace pattern from the chart, 7 stitches in stockinette stitch.
Make sure the yarn overs align (you should get 6 groups of: yarn over, cdd, yarn over).
In the next round, cast on 14 stitches between the front and back sections.
Work these 14 stitches in garter stitch; work all remaining stitches as established.
Work 2 more rounds in the same manner, then change the 14 garter stitch stitches to stockinette stitch.
Under the armholes, work in stockinette stitch; elsewhere continue in the lace pattern according to the chart.
Repeat the first part of the lace chart (between * and *) until the piece measures about 6¼ inches (16 cm) from the armhole.
Then switch to the second part of the lace chart and work all stitches accordingly.
Work the first round with increases, then continue the lace pattern, repeating the section between * and *.
When the piece measures 14¼ inches (36 cm) from the armhole, bind off all stitches.
