Sweater with Lace Cable Pattern
How to knit the sweater with lace cables:
Size: US 10/12 (12/14), UK 14/16 (16/18)
Materials:
500 (600) g yarn (50% linen, 50% polyacrylic, length 120 m/50 g ≈ 131 yd/1.76 oz). Knitting needles and circular needles size 3 mm (US 2½).
Stockinette stitch: right-side rows knit stitches, wrong-side rows purl stitches.
Reverse stockinette stitch: right-side rows purl stitches, wrong-side rows knit stitches.
Band pattern: number of stitches is a multiple of 8.
Row 1: * knit 3, slip 1 stitch (= slip the stitch purlwise, yarn behind the work), slip 1 stitch, knit 3, repeat from *.
Row 2: purl stitches.
Repeat Rows 1 and 2 throughout.
Lace Pattern 1 (over 24 stitches):
Rows 1–4: stockinette stitch.
Row 5: * knit 4, yarn over, knit 2 together, knit 3, yarn over, knit 2 together, knit 1, repeat from * once more.
Row 6 and all following wrong-side rows: purl all stitches and yarn overs.
Row 7: * knit 1, slip 1 stitch as if to knit, knit 1 and pass the slipped stitch over the knitted stitch, yarn over, knit 3, slip 1 stitch as if to knit, knit 1 and pass the slipped stitch over the knitted stitch, yarn over, knit 4, repeat from * once more.
Work Rows 1–8 once, then repeat Rows 5–8 throughout.
Lace Pattern 2 (over 7 stitches):
Row 1: knit stitches.
Row 2 and all wrong-side rows: purl all stitches and yarn overs.
Row 3: knit 4, yarn over, knit 2 together, knit 1.
Row 5: knit 1, slip 1 stitch as if to knit, knit 1 and pass the slipped stitch over the knitted stitch, yarn over, knit 4.
Work Rows 1–6 once, then repeat Rows 3–6 throughout.
Cable (over 10 stitches):
Rows 1–6: 2 stitches reverse stockinette stitch, 6 stitches stockinette stitch, 2 stitches reverse stockinette stitch.
Row 7: purl 2, cross 6 stitches to the left (= place 3 stitches on a cable needle in front of the work, knit the next 3 stitches, then knit the stitches from the cable needle), purl 2.
Row 8: work the stitches as they appear.
Rows 9–12: as Rows 1–6.
Repeat Rows 1–12 throughout.
Gauge: 24 stitches and 31 rows = 10 × 10 cm (4 × 4 in).
Back:
Cast on 128 (140) stitches and work the band for 3 cm (1.2 in) as follows:
Rows 1 and 2: stockinette stitch.
Rows 3–8: edge stitch, knit 3, 120 stitches band pattern, knit 3, edge stitch (edge stitch, knit 1, 136 stitches band pattern, knit 1, edge stitch).
Rows 9 and 10: stockinette stitch.
Then continue as follows: edge stitch, knit 0 (6), * 24 stitches Lace Pattern 1, 10 stitches cable, repeat from * 2 more times, 24 stitches Lace Pattern 1, knit 0 (6), edge stitch.
At the same time for the side shaping from the band increase on both sides every 20th row 5 times 1 stitch in stockinette stitch = 138 (150) stitches.
After 9 cm = 28 rows (3.5 in) from the band continue working in stockinette stitch.
After 33 cm = 102 rows (13 in) from the band arrange the stitches as follows:
edge stitch, knit 3, purl 2, * 7 stitches Lace Pattern 2, 10 stitches cable, repeat from * 6 more times, 7 stitches Lace Pattern 2, purl 2, knit 3, edge stitch (edge stitch, purl 1, 10 stitches cable, * 7 stitches Lace Pattern 2, 10 stitches cable, repeat from * 7 more times, purl 1, edge stitch).
For the shoulder slopes after 55 cm = 170 rows (21.7 in) from the band bind off on both sides in every 2nd row 1 × 12 stitches and 3 × 11 stitches (1 × 14 stitches, 1 × 13 stitches and 2 × 12 stitches).
At the same time with the first shoulder decrease for the neckline bind off the middle 16 stitches and finish each side separately.
For the rounding at the inner edge bind off in every 2nd row 2 × 8 stitches.
After 57 cm = 176 rows (22.4 in) from the band all stitches are bound off.
Front:
Work as the back, but with a deeper neckline.
For this after 50 cm = 154 rows (19.7 in) from the band bind off the middle 16 stitches and finish each side separately.
For the rounding at the inner edge bind off in every 2nd row 1 × 3 stitches, 4 × 2 stitches and 5 × 1 stitch.
Work the shoulder slopes as for the back.
Sleeves:
Cast on 52 stitches and work the band as for the back, working Rows 3–8 as follows: edge stitch, knit 1, 48 stitches band pattern, knit 1, edge stitch.
Then arrange the stitches as follows: edge stitch, knit 8, 12 stitches Lace Pattern 1, 10 stitches cable, 12 stitches Lace Pattern 1, knit 8, edge stitch.
At the same time for the sleeve shaping from the band increase on both sides 34 times every 4th row 1 stitch in stockinette stitch = 120 stitches.
After 45 cm = 140 rows (17.7 in) from the band bind off all stitches.
Finishing:
Close the seams, leaving the upper 25 cm (9.8 in) open at the side seams for the armholes.
Pick up about 116 stitches along the neckline with circular needles, work 1 round purl stitches and then 2 cm (0.8 in) stockinette stitch in the round (knit all stitches in every round).
Then bind off the stitches loosely.
Fold the neckline band, sleeve edges and lower hem to the inside halfway and sew.
Set in the sleeves.
