How to knit the Sweater with Cable Stitch Pattern
Sizes: 40/42 (44/46) 50/52
US sizes: 10/12 (14/16) 18/20
UK sizes: 14/16 (18/20) 22/24
Materials:
700 (750) 800 g wool yarn (approx. 875 (940) 1000 m / 955 (1025) 1095 yds total length; 125 m/50 g); knitting needles 4.0 mm (US 6), short circular needles 3.5 mm (US 4) and one cable needle.
Ribbing Pattern: alternately k1 and p1.
Stockinette stitch: on right-side rows knit stitches, on wrong-side rows purl stitches.
Garter stitch: knit all stitches on right-side and wrong-side rows.
Border pattern: number of stitches multiple of 14 + 3 stitches.
Work according to chart 1, which shows right-side rows only.
On wrong-side rows, work the stitches as they appear.
Across, begin with 1 edge stitch, repeat the pattern repeat throughout and end with 2 stitches after the repeat.
Vertically, repeat rows 1–18 throughout.
Cable panel (over 12 stitches):
Work according to chart 1, which shows right-side rows only.
On wrong-side rows, work the stitches as they appear, work the garter stitch stitches knit.
Across, work the indicated 12 stitches once.
Vertically, repeat rows 1–60 throughout.
Attention! When working in the round, repeat the pattern repeat throughout.
Gauge:
Stockinette stitch: 21 stitches and 28 rows = 10 x 10 cm (4 x 4 inches),
Border pattern: 28 stitches and 28 rows = 10 x 10 cm (4 x 4 inches);
12 cable stitches = 4.5 cm (1.75 inches) wide.
Back:
Cast on 171 (185) 199 stitches and work 19 cm (7.5 inches) border = 54 rows in Border pattern, in the last row evenly knit 2 stitches together 35 (39) 43 times = 136 (146) 156 stitches.
Then work 6 rows in garter stitch, after that continue in the following sequence: 1 edge stitch, 24 (27) 29 stitches in stockinette stitch, * 12 stitches cable panel, 25 (27) 30 stitches in stockinette stitch and repeat from * 2 times, 12 stitches cable panel, 24 (27) 29 stitches in stockinette stitch, 1 edge stitch.
At a height of 47 (49) 50 cm (18.5 (19.25) 19.75 inches) from the border bind off the middle 28 (32) 32 stitches and finish both sides separately.
For the neck shaping bind off in every 2nd row 1 time 5 stitches and 1 time 3 stitches.
Bind off the remaining 46 (49) 54 stitches at a height of 2 cm (0.75 inch) from the beginning of the neckline.
Front:
Work as the Back, only with a deeper neckline.
For this, at a height of 43 (45) 46 cm (17 (17.75) 18 inches) from the border bind off the middle 24 (28) 28 stitches and finish both sides separately.
For the neckline shaping in every 2nd row bind off 1 time 3 stitches, 2 times 2 stitches and 3 times 1 stitch.
Bind off the remaining 46 (49) 54 stitches at the same height as the Back.
Sleeves:
Cast on 59 stitches each and work 13 cm (5 inches) = 36 rows in Border pattern, in the last row evenly knit 2 stitches together 11 times = 48 stitches.
Then work 6 rows in garter stitch, after that continue in the following sequence: 1 edge stitch, 17 stitches in stockinette stitch, 12 stitches cable panel, 17 stitches in stockinette stitch, 1 edge stitch.
For the sleeve shaping increase on both sides 8 (5) 2 times in every 4th row and 29 (34) 41 times in every 2nd row 1 stitch in stockinette stitch = 122 (126) 134 stitches.
At a height of 33 (32) 32 cm (13 (12.5) 12.5 inches) from the border bind off all stitches.
Finishing:
Work all seams.
Leave the side seams open at the top for 28 (29) 31 cm (11 (11.5) 12.25 inches) for the armholes.
For the neckline border pick up 126 (140) 140 stitches along the neckline edge with circular needles and work in the round in Border pattern rows 3–14 and 4 rounds in Ribbing Pattern, then bind off the stitches in pattern.
Sew in the sleeves.
