Summer Sweater with Lace Patterns
How to knit the Sweater with short sleeves and lace patterns:
Sizes: UK 10/12 (14/16) 18/20 / US 6/8 (10/12) 14/16
Materials:
550 (600) 650 g yarn (100% cotton, 137 yds/50 g); knitting needles size UK 10 / US 4 and UK 8 / US 6 and short circular needles size UK 10 / US 4.
Garter Stitch: knit all stitches; in the round alternate 1 round knit stitches and 1 round purl stitches.
Stockinette Stitch: right-side rows - knit stitches, wrong-side rows - purl stitches.
Lace Pattern 1: number of stitches divisible by 12 + 2 edge stitches.
Work according to chart 1, which shows only right-side rows.
On wrong-side rows, work the stitches as they appear, purl the yarn overs.
Repeat the pattern repeat throughout between edge stitches.
Repeat Rows 1-8 throughout.
Lace Pattern 2: number of stitches divisible by 8 + 1 + 2 edge stitches.
Work according to chart 2, which shows only right-side rows.
On wrong-side rows, purl all stitches and yarn overs.
Begin with the stitches before the pattern repeat, repeat the pattern repeat throughout, end with the stitches after the pattern repeat.
Repeat Rows 1-4 throughout.
Lace Pattern 3 (over 15 stitches):
Work according to chart 3, which shows only right-side rows.
On wrong-side rows, purl all stitches and yarn overs.
Work the marked 15 stitches once across.
Work Rows 1-36 once vertically.
Lace Pattern 4 (over 15 stitches):
Work according to chart 4, which shows only right-side rows.
On wrong-side rows, purl all stitches and yarn overs.
Work the marked 15 stitches once across.
Work Rows 1-24 once vertically.
Pattern Sequence A (over 131 (139) 155 stitches): 1 edge stitch, 5 (7) 13 stitches Stockinette Stitch, * 15 stitches Lace Pattern 3, 11 (12) 13 stitches Stockinette Stitch, repeat from * 3 times, 15 stitches Lace Pattern 3, 5 (7) 13 stitches Stockinette Stitch, 1 edge stitch.
Pattern Sequence B (over 131 (139) 155 stitches): 1 edge stitch, 20 (23) 27 stitches Stockinette Stitch, * 15 stitches Lace Pattern 4, 22 (23) 27 stitches Stockinette Stitch, repeat from * once, 15 stitches Lace Pattern 4, 20 (23) 27 stitches Stockinette Stitch, 1 edge stitch.
Gauge:
in Pattern 1 or in the pattern sequence: 23 stitches and 32 rows = 4 x 4 inches (10 x 10 cm),
in Pattern 2 using needles size UK 8 / US 6: 23 stitches and 33 rows = 4 x 4 inches (10 x 10 cm).
Back:
Cast on 122 (134) 146 stitches using needles size UK 10 / US 4, work 0.5 inches (1 cm) in Garter Stitch for the edging and 6.75 inches = 56 rows in Lace Pattern 1, while evenly increasing 9 (5) 9 knit through back loop stitches from the horizontal strand in the last row of the edging = 131 (139) 155 stitches.
Change to needles size UK 8 / US 6 and continue as follows: 0 (2) 2 rows Stockinette Stitch, 36 rows Pattern Sequence A, 2 rows Stockinette Stitch, 24 rows Pattern Sequence B, 2 (4) 4 rows Stockinette Stitch.
For the yoke continue in Lace Pattern 2.
At a yoke height of 9.5 (10) 10.75 inches (24 (25) 27 cm), bind off the center 27 (27) 33 stitches for the neckline and finish both sides separately.
For the shaping at the inner edge bind off in every 2nd row 1 x 5 stitches, 1 x 3 stitches, 1 x 2 stitches and 1 x 1 stitch.
At a neckline height of 1.25 inches (3 cm), bind off the remaining 41 (45) 50 shoulder stitches.
Front:
Work as for the Back, but with a deeper neckline.
For this, at a yoke height of 8.25 (8.75) 9.5 inches (21 (22) 24 cm), bind off the center 15 (15) 21 stitches and finish both sides separately.
For the shaping at the inner edge bind off in every 2nd row 1 x 5 stitches, 1 x 4 stitches, 1 x 3 stitches, 1 x 2 stitches and 3 x 1 stitch.
Bind off the remaining 41 (45) 50 shoulder stitches at the same height as for the Back.
Sleeves:
Cast on 67 (71) 75 stitches using needles size UK 10 / US 4 and work 0.5 inches (1 cm) in Garter Stitch for the edging.
Change to needles size UK 8 / US 6 and continue in Lace Pattern 2 (for size UK 14/16 - US 10/12 begin the pattern after the edge stitch from the arrow and instead of the first and last yarn over work 1 knit stitch).
For the sleeve shaping after the edging increase on both sides 1 (1) 2 times in every 2nd row and 29 (29) 31 times in every row 1 stitch each = 127 (131) 141 stitches, while incorporating the increased stitches into Pattern 2.
At 4 (4) 4.25 inches (10 (10) 11 cm) from the edging, bind off all stitches.
Finishing:
Join the shoulder seams.
Join the side seams, leaving the upper 10.75 (11) 12 inches (27 (28) 30 cm) open for the armholes.
Using the circular needles pick up approximately 100 (100) 108 stitches along the neckline, work 5 rounds in Garter Stitch and bind off all stitches.
Set in the sleeves.
