Sleeveless Cardigan and Beret
Knitting instructions for the sleeveless cardigan:
Sizes: US 8 / UK 12
Materials:
35.3 oz for the cardigan and 5.3 oz for the beret (52% merino wool, 48% acrylic, 137 yd/3.5 oz); knitting needles 6 mm and 6.5 mm, and 7 buttons.
Tubular Ribbing: With contrasting yarn, cast on half the required number of stitches;
Row 1: With working yarn, * knit 1 stitch, yarn over, repeat from * to *;
Row 2: * work the yarn over as a knit stitch, slip 1 stitch purlwise without working it, yarn in front *, repeat from * to *;
Row 3 and all following rows: * knit 1 stitch, slip 1 stitch purlwise, yarn in front *, repeat from * to *;
remove the contrasting yarn in the finished piece.
Ribbing Pattern 1/1: Alternate 1 knit stitch, 1 purl stitch.
Stockinette Stitch: On right-side rows, knit all stitches; on wrong-side rows, purl all stitches.
Garter Stitch: Knit all stitches on both right-side and wrong-side rows.
Main Pattern: Number of stitches multiple of 4 + 1.
Row 1: * slip 1 stitch purlwise, purl 3 stitches *, repeat from * to *, slip the last stitch purlwise;
Row 2: Slip 1 stitch purlwise, * knit 3 stitches, slip 1 stitch purlwise *, repeat from * to *;
Row 3: Knit all stitches;
Row 4: Purl all stitches;
Repeat these 4 rows throughout the height.
Cardigan:
Gauge in Main Pattern: 16 stitches and 22 rows = 4 x 4 inches.
Back:
With 6 mm needles, cast on 76 stitches and work 4 rows of Tubular Ribbing and 16 rows of Ribbing Pattern 1/1.
Then change to 6.5 mm needles and work in Main Pattern, evenly increasing 10 stitches in the first row; then increase 1 stitch on each side every 2 inches, 8 times.
After 19 inches from the cast-on edge, work the outer 3 stitches on each side in Tubular Ribbing, the remaining stitches in Main Pattern.
After 26 inches from the cast-on edge, for the shoulder shaping, work the outer 2 stitches on each side in Stockinette Stitch and decrease 1 stitch after the first 2 stitches and before the last 2 stitches on every row, 34 times.
After 33 inches from the cast-on edge, place the remaining 34 stitches on hold.
Right Front:
With 6 mm needles, cast on 49 stitches and work 4 rows of Tubular Ribbing.
Then with 6.5 mm needles, work the outer 3 stitches on each side in Tubular Ribbing, the remaining stitches in Ribbing Pattern 1/1.
Continue as follows: 3 stitches in Tubular Ribbing, 8 stitches in Ribbing Pattern 1/1 (button band), 44 stitches in Main Pattern, evenly increasing 6 stitches in the first row; at the same time, after the first 5 stitches, make 6 buttonholes (bind off 2 stitches and cast them on again in the next row) spaced 5 inches apart.
Then increase 1 stitch every 2 inches, 8 times.
After 19 inches from the cast-on edge, work the last 3 stitches in Tubular Ribbing; after 26 inches from the cast-on edge, for the shoulder shaping, work the last 2 stitches in Stockinette Stitch and decrease 1 stitch on the left side before the last 2 stitches on every row, 34 times.
After 28.5 inches from the cast-on edge, for the neckline, bind off 16 stitches on the right side, then decrease 1 stitch on the right side in every second row, 8 times.
After 33 inches from the cast-on edge, place the remaining 3 stitches on hold.
Left Front:
Work symmetrically, without buttonholes.
Finishing:
Join the shoulder seams.
For the collar, with 6.5 mm needles, pick up 113 stitches along the neckline of the back and fronts and work the outer 3 stitches on each side in Tubular Ribbing, the remaining 107 stitches in Ribbing Pattern 1/1; after 2 inches, after the first 5 stitches, make one buttonhole aligned above the previous ones; after 2.75 inches, work 2 rows of Tubular Ribbing and bind off all stitches using a sewn bind-off.
Sew the side seams up to 19 inches from the lower edge of the cardigan.
Sew on the buttons.
Beret:
Gauge in Garter Stitch: 16 stitches and 26 rows = 4 x 4 inches.
Knitting instructions:
With 6 mm needles, cast on 81 stitches and work 4 rows of Tubular Ribbing and 6 rows of Ribbing Pattern 1/1.
Then work in Garter Stitch, evenly increasing 8 stitches every second row, 5 times, then evenly decreasing 8 stitches every second row, 14 times.
Over the remaining 9 stitches, work the pom-pom: increase 9 stitches every second row, 3 times (= 36 stitches), then work 2 rows without increases and then decrease 10 stitches every second row, 3 times; place the remaining 5 stitches on hold and cut the yarn.
Thread the yarn end through the held stitches and pull tight.
Sew the beret seam.
