Short Sleeve Lace Cardigan
How to knit the Summer Lace Diamond Cardigan:
Sizes: US 6/8 and 10/12 (UK 10/12 and 14/16).
Materials:
350 (400) g /12.35 (14.11) oz yarn (55% cotton, 45% viscose; 120 yd/1.76 oz); US 1.5 and 2.5 knitting needles (2.5 mm and 3 mm); 6 buttons.
Lace Diamond Pattern (main pattern), US 2.5 knitting needles:
Work according to chart, which shows right-side rows only.
On wrong-side rows, purl all stitches and yarn overs.
Work Rows 1-66 once, then repeat Rows 3-66 throughout.
Button Band Pattern, US 1.5 knitting needles: multiple of 6 stitches + 1 + 2 edge stitches.
Row 1 (wrong side): knit stitches.
Row 2 (right side): 1 edge stitch, k1, * yarn over, k1, slip 1 stitch as if to knit, knit 2 stitches together, pass the slipped stitch over, k1, yarn over, k1; repeat from *, end with 1 edge stitch.
Row 3: purl all stitches and yarn overs.
Work Rows 1-3 once, then repeat Rows 2 and 3 throughout.
Gauge: 24 stitches x 33 rows = 4 x 4 in (10 x 10 cm).
Back:
Cast on 105 (117) stitches and work 1 in (2.5 cm) in Button Band Pattern.
Continue with the main pattern and evenly increase 8 (6) stitches in Row 1 = 113 (123) stitches.
In Row 3 work the pattern as follows: 1 edge stitch, stitches before pattern repeat, 10 (11) pattern repeats, stitches after pattern repeat, 1 edge stitch.
For side shaping increase 1 stitch at both sides in every 14th row 5 times = 123 (133) stitches.
At a height of 11.5 (12) in (29 (30) cm) bind off for armholes at both sides in every 2nd row 1 time 4 stitches, 3 times 2 stitches and 5 times 1 stitch = 93 (103) stitches.
At a height of 19 (19.75) in (48 (50) cm) bind off the center 25 stitches for neckline, then at both sides in every 2nd row bind off 2 times 4 stitches.
At the same time for shoulder shaping bind off in every 2nd row 2 times 6 stitches and 2 times 7 stitches (1 time 7 stitches and 3 times 8 stitches).
Left Front:
Cast on 57 (63) stitches and work 1 in (2.5 cm) in Button Band Pattern.
Continue with the main pattern and increase 1 (0) stitch in Row 1 = 58 (63) stitches.
In Row 3 work the pattern as follows: 1 edge stitch, stitches before pattern repeat, 5 pattern repeats and the first stitch of pattern repeat, and in Row 11 before the edge stitch work together only 2 stitches instead of 3 (5 pattern repeats and stitches after pattern repeat), 1 edge stitch.
Work side shaping and armhole at the right side as for Back.
At a height of 12.5 (13.5) in (32 (34) cm) bind off at the left side for neckline 1 time 5 stitches, then in every 2nd row 1 time 3 stitches, 2 times 2 stitches and 6 times 1 stitch, then in every 4th row 4 times 1 stitch.
At a height of 19 (19.75) in (48 (50) cm) work shoulder shaping as for Back.
Right Front: work symmetrically.
Sleeves:
Cast on 81 stitches and work 1 in (2.5 cm) in Button Band Pattern.
Then work the main pattern and evenly increase 2 stitches in Row 1 = 83 stitches.
In Row 3 work the pattern as follows: 1 edge stitch, stitches before pattern repeat, 7 pattern repeats, stitches after pattern repeat, 1 edge stitch.
For sleeve shaping increase at both sides alternately in every 2nd and 4th row 8 times 1 stitch (4 times 1 stitch), and for size 10/12 additionally increase in every 2nd row 6 times 1 stitch = 99 (103) stitches.
At a height of 4.25 in (11 cm) bind off for sleeve cap at both sides 1 time 3 stitches, then in every 2nd row 6 times 2 stitches, 12 times 1 stitch, 5 times 2 stitches and 1 time 3 stitches, then bind off remaining stitches.
Finishing:
Join shoulder seams.
Pick up 153 stitches along neckline edge and work 1 in (2.5 cm) in Button Band Pattern.
Pick up 81 (87) stitches along vertical front edges and narrow edges of neckline band and work 1 in (2.5 cm) in Button Band Pattern.
Join side and sleeve seams. Set in sleeves.
Sew on buttons.
Buttonholes are not worked, the band serves as fastening.
