Short Sleeve Cardigan with Lace Flower Pattern
How to knit a summer short sleeve cardigan:
Sizes: US 6 (US 8/10) US 12/14; UK sizes: 10 (12/14) 16/18
Materials:
450 (500) 550 g/15.9 (17.6) 19.4 oz yarn (46% acrylic, 31% viscose, 23% cotton, 126 yds/1.76 oz); US 2.5 and US 6 knitting needles; US E-4 crochet hook; 5 buttons.
Cable Ribbing Pattern, US 2.5 needles:
Right-side rows: * p1, knit the 2nd stitch before the 1st stitch, knit the 1st stitch; p1, repeat from *.
Wrong-side rows: work all stitches as they appear.
Work all following patterns with US 6 needles.
Stockinette Stitch: right-side rows - knit stitches, wrong-side rows - purl stitches.
Lace Stripe (over 3 stitches):
Row 1 (right side): yarn over, slip 1 stitch as if to knit, knit 2 stitches together and pass the slipped stitch over; yarn over.

On wrong-side rows, purl all stitches and yarn overs.
Repeat Rows 1-36 throughout.
Gauge: 20 stitches and 29 rows = 4 x 4 in (10 x 10 cm).
Back:
Cast on 86 (94) 102 stitches and work 2 in (5 cm) in Cable Ribbing Pattern, increasing 18 stitches evenly across the last row = 104 (112) 120 stitches.
Then work as follows: * 1 edge stitch, 10 (14) 18 stitches in Stockinette Stitch, 3 stitches Lace Stripe, 25 stitches Lace Flowers, 3 stitches Lace Stripe **, 20 stitches in Stockinette Stitch, end with stitches from ** to *.
After 15 in (38 cm) from cast-on, for armholes bind off 4 stitches on both sides, then in every 2nd row bind off 0 (2) 4 times 4 stitches and 4 (2) 0 times 3 stitches = 72 (76) 80 stitches.
After 22.75 (23.25) 23.5 in (58 (59) 60 cm) from cast-on, for shoulder shaping bind off 5 (7) 6 stitches on both sides, then in every 2nd row 3 times 5 (5) 6 stitches.
At the same time, for neckline bind off the center 10 stitches and finish both sides separately.
At neckline edge bind off in every 2nd row 1 time 6 stitches and 1 time 5 stitches = total height 23.5 (24) 24.5 in (60 (61) 62 cm).
Left Front:
Cast on 42 (46) 50 stitches and work 2 in (5 cm) in Cable Ribbing Pattern, increasing 10 stitches evenly across the last row = 52 (56) 60 stitches.
Then work as follows: 1 edge stitch, 10 (14) 18 stitches in Stockinette Stitch, 3 stitches Lace Stripe, 25 stitches Lace Flowers, 3 stitches Lace Stripe, 9 stitches in Stockinette Stitch, 1 edge stitch.
Work armhole and shoulder shaping at outer edge as for Back.
After 17 (17.25) 17.75 in (43 (44) 45 cm) from cast-on, for neckline at inner edge bind off 1 stitch, then alternately in every 4th and 2nd row bind off 15 times 1 stitch.
Right Front: Work symmetrically.
Sleeves:
Cast on 46 (50) 54 stitches and work 2 in (5 cm) in Cable Ribbing Pattern, increasing 23 stitches evenly across the last row = 69 (73) 77 stitches.
Then work as follows: 1 edge stitch, 18 (20) 22 stitches in Stockinette Stitch, 3 stitches Lace Stripe, 25 stitches Lace Flowers, 3 stitches Lace Stripe, 18 (20) 22 stitches in Stockinette Stitch, 1 edge stitch. For sleeve shaping increase on both sides in every 2nd row 3 times 1 stitch and in every 4th row 5 times 1 stitch, working increased stitches in Stockinette Stitch = 85 (89) 93 stitches.
After 6 in (15 cm) from cast-on, for sleeve cap bind off 3 stitches on both sides, then in every 2nd row 3 (4) 5 times 2 stitches, 19 (17) 15 times 1 stitch, 3 (4) 5 times 2 stitches.
After 13 in (33 cm) from cast-on bind off remaining stitches.
Finishing:
Join shoulder seams.
Crochet 3 rows of single crochet along vertical front edges.
Join side and sleeve seams. Set in sleeves.
Sew on buttons: place the 1st button 0.5 (0.75) 0.75 in (1 (2) 2 cm) from lower edge, the last button at the base of neckline, and space remaining buttons evenly between them.
Make button loops by stretching 2 single crochet stitches for each loop.
