Materials:
500 (600) g yarn (100% alpaca lambswool, length = 50 m/100 g); straight knitting needles size 10 mm (US 15); double-pointed needles size 8 mm (US 11); crochet hook size 8 mm (US L-11).

Garter Stitch: work all stitches knit on right-side and wrong-side rows.

Reverse Stockinette Stitch: right-side rows purl, wrong-side rows knit.
Checkerboard Stitch Pattern:
Rows 1–6: * 5 stitches in Stockinette Stitch, 5 stitches in Reverse Stockinette Stitch.
Rows 7–12: * 5 stitches in Reverse Stockinette Stitch, 5 stitches in Stockinette Stitch.
Attention! The pattern begins with the center stitch of the Stockinette square (row 11 of the chart).
The pattern expands as a result of increases on both sides by 1 stitch.
Ribbing Pattern in rounds: number of stitches divisible by 8. * 2 knit stitches, 4 purl stitches, 2 knit stitches, repeat from *.

Beginning of the poncho (first 3 stitches wide):
Work according to the chart, where only right-side rows are shown.
On wrong-side rows, work the stitches as they appear or according to the pattern.
Work rows 1–30 once, then continue in pattern.

Gauge:
Checkerboard Stitch Pattern and Garter Stitch: 9 stitches and 13.5 rows = 10 × 10 cm.
Ribbing Pattern (measured slightly stretched): 8 stitches and 14.5 rows = 10 × 10 cm.

Work the poncho as one piece, starting at the lower front edge and continuing over the shoulders.
The sleeves are worked onto the finished poncho.

Front and back:
With needles size 10 mm cast on 3 stitches and work according to the chart.
For the edge, work Garter Stitch between the edge stitches; work edge stitches in Garter Stitch as well.
At the same time, for the shaping on both sides of the center stitch, increase 4 times 1 knit stitch through the back loop from the horizontal strand in every 2nd row and continue in Garter Stitch.
After 7.5 cm = 10 rows (11 stitches on needle), work as follows: edge stitch + 4 stitches in Garter Stitch (= edging), 1 stitch in Checkerboard Stitch Pattern, 4 stitches in Garter Stitch + edge stitch (= edging).
At the same time, for further shaping, increase 1 × 2 stitches in the 1st row from the edging, then increase 27 × 2 stitches in every 2nd row and 4 × 2 stitches in every row as follows: after the first 5 edging stitches at the beginning of the row and before the last 5 edging stitches at the end of the row, increase 1 knit or purl stitch through the back loop (according to the Checkerboard Stitch Pattern) from the horizontal strand and incorporate the increased stitches into the pattern.
The first increases are shown in the chart; afterwards continue according to the pattern.
75 stitches on needle.
After 52 cm = 70 rows from the cast-on edge, work straight.
After 71 cm = 96 rows from the cast-on edge, bind off the center 23 stitches for the neckline.
26 stitches remain for each shoulder.
After 72 cm = 97 rows from the cast-on edge, the shoulder line is reached.
In the next wrong-side row cast on the center 23 stitches again and continue working the back on all 75 stitches, maintaining the pattern.
For the shaping, after 19 cm = 26 rows from the neckline, decrease 1 × 2 stitches as follows:
At the beginning of the row work the first 2 stitches of the Checkerboard Stitch Pattern after the edging together according to the pattern (knit or purl).
At the end of the row work the last 2 stitches of the Checkerboard Stitch Pattern before the edging together according to the pattern.
Repeat these decreases 3 more times in every row and 28 times in every 2nd row = 11 stitches.
After 64 cm = 86 rows from neckline, work the edging in Garter Stitch and simultaneously on both sides of the center stitch work 2 stitches together knitwise.
Repeat these decreases 3 more times in every 2nd row.
After 71 cm = 96 rows from neckline, bind off the remaining 3 stitches.

Finishing:
Fold the poncho in half along the shoulder line.
For the left sleeve, pick up 32 (40) stitches evenly along the top 20 (25) cm of the front and back with double-pointed needles (= 8 (10) stitches per needle), beginning at the front; join in the round and work in Ribbing Pattern.
To reduce width, after 10 cm from beginning of the sleeve, work 2 stitches together purlwise in every 2nd purl column; after another 10 cm, work 2 stitches together purlwise in the remaining purl columns = 28 (35) stitches.
After 30 cm from beginning of the sleeve, work 2 stitches together knitwise in every 2nd knit column = 26 (33) stitches.
For the thumb opening, after 35 cm from beginning of the sleeve, bind off the 8th stitch from beginning of round and work 3 cm back and forth in rows (on wrong-side rows work knit stitches purl and purl stitches knit).
Then cast on 1 stitch again, incorporate it into the pattern and continue working in rounds.
After 40 cm from beginning of the sleeve, in the remaining knit columns work 2 stitches together knitwise again = 24 (30) stitches.
Then work * 3 knit stitches, 3 purl stitches *.
After 45 cm from beginning of the sleeve, bind off all stitches according to the pattern.
Work the right sleeve symmetrically, binding off the 8th stitch before the end of the round for the thumb opening.
Crochet the neckline with 2 rounds of single crochet.
