Poncho Sweater with a High Collar and Wide Ruffled Edges

How to work the warm poncho sweater with a high collar:
Size: One size.

Materials:
900 g of yarn for the poncho and 360 g of yarn for the collar (20% baby alpaca, 80% merino wool, 90 m/50 g); knitting needles size 4 mm (US 6 / UK 8), 6 mm (US 10 / UK 4), 8 mm (US 11 / UK 0), 10 mm (US 15 / UK 000) and a cable needle.
Prepare the yarn by working with the strand held double.

Garter stitch (with the strand held double, using 8 mm and 10 mm needles): work all stitches on right-side and wrong-side rows in knit stitches.
Relief Cable Pattern (with a single strand, using 6 mm needles): The number of stitches must be a multiple of 20 + 2 + 2 edge stitches.
Row 1 (right side): 1 knit stitch, * cross 10 stitches to the right (= slip 5 stitches to a cable needle and hold behind the work, work the next 5 stitches in knit stitch, then work the 5 stitches from the cable needle in knit stitch), cross 10 stitches to the left (= slip 5 stitches to a cable needle and hold in front of the work, work the next 5 stitches in knit stitch, then work the 5 stitches from the cable needle in knit stitch) *, repeat from * to *, end with 1 knit stitch.
Row 2 and all even rows (wrong side): purl all stitches.
Rows 3, 5 and 7: knit all stitches.
Row 9: repeat the pattern from Row 1.

Stockinette stitch and reverse stockinette stitch (single strand) using 4 mm needles; double strand using 6 mm needles.

Gauge:
Garter stitch with double strand on 8 mm needles: 12 stitches and 22 rows = 10 × 10 cm.
Cable relief pattern (single strand) on 6 mm needles: 20 stitches = 9 cm in width.

Lower part of the poncho (2 pieces):
With double strand and 10 mm needles, cast on 142 stitches.
Work 14 rows in garter stitch.
Then work 20 rows in the relief cable pattern (single strand, 6 mm needles), 14 rows in garter stitch with double strand on 8 mm needles, working all stitches 2 together knitwise across the first row.
Leave the remaining 71 stitches on hold.

Lower part of the sleeves (2 pieces):
With double strand and 10 mm needles, cast on 100 stitches.
Work 14 rows in garter stitch and place the stitches on hold.

Yoke: worked in 2 parts.

First part:
Using 6 mm needles, pick up the first 50 held stitches from one sleeve piece (keep the remaining 50 stitches on hold for the second part), then pick up 71 stitches from one lower poncho piece, and then 50 held stitches from the second sleeve piece (keep the first 50 stitches on hold). You will have 171 stitches.

Then * continue with a single strand, cast on 1 new stitch, work 51 knit stitches, on the next 69 stitches work 2 stitches from each stitch, then work 51 knit stitches and cast on 1 new stitch.

On the resulting 242 stitches, work the wrong-side row in purl stitches, then work 2 rows in stockinette stitch, 12 rows in the relief cable pattern, 14 rows in garter stitch with double strand and 8 mm needles, working all stitches 2 together knitwise across the first row.

On the remaining 121 stitches, work 4 rows in stockinette stitch with a single strand and 6 mm needles, increasing 1 stitch in the first row (= 122 stitches), then work 12 rows in the relief cable pattern, then 14 rows in garter stitch with double strand and 8 mm needles, again working all stitches 2 together knitwise across the first row.

On the remaining 61 stitches, work 4 rows in stockinette stitch with a single strand and 6 mm needles, increasing 1 stitch in the first row (= 62 stitches), then work 12 rows in the relief cable pattern and bind off all stitches.

Second part:
Using 6 mm needles, pick up the remaining 50 stitches from the sleeve, then 71 stitches from the second lower poncho piece, then 50 stitches from the left side of the second sleeve piece.
On the 171 stitches obtained, work from * to * following the instructions of the first part of the yoke.

Finishing:
Sew together the two parts of the yoke.
Sew the seams of the lower sleeve pieces and the lower poncho pieces.

Detachable collar:
With a single strand and 4 mm needles, cast on 189 stitches.
Work * 3 knit stitches, 3 purl stitches *, repeat from * to *, end with 3 knit stitches.
When the collar measures 24 cm (64 rows), work 2 stitches together purlwise in every group of 3 purl stitches.
Continue on the remaining 158 stitches.
When the collar measures 30 cm (80 rows), again work 2 stitches together purlwise in every group of 2 purl stitches.
Continue on the remaining 127 stitches.
When the collar measures 36 cm (96 rows), bind off all stitches.
Sew the sides of the collar.
