Long Pullover with Lace Cables
How to knit a long pullover with lace cables:
Sizes: US 6 (10, 14) = UK 10 (14, 18)
Material:
750 (800–850) g of yarn (100% cotton; 116 yd/50 g); knitting needles size 3 mm (US 2½), 3.5 mm (US 4); circular needles size 3 mm (US 2½), 20 in (50 cm) long.
Stockinette stitch: Right Side Rows – knit stitches, Wrong Side Rows – purl stitches.
Lace Cable Pattern (main pattern):
Work according to the chart, which shows only Right Side Rows.
On Wrong Side Rows, work the stitches as they appear, purl the yarn overs.
In width, repeat the pattern repeat from arrow a to arrow b.
In height, repeat the rows from the 1st row throughout.
Gauge:
in main pattern: 30 stitches and 33 rows = 4 x 4 in (10 x 10 cm).
Back:
With needles size 3 mm (US 2½) cast on 130 (140–150) stitches and work 6 rows in stockinette stitch for the border.
In the 7th row, alternate *knit 2 stitches together, yarn over*.
Then work 7 more rows in stockinette stitch.
In the following 8th row (Right Side Row), knit together each stitch on the needle with the corresponding stitch of the cast-on edge.
Work the next Wrong Side Row in purl stitches, while increasing as follows: after the first 2 stitches, then 18 (20–22) times after every 5 stitches, and 9 times after every 4 stitches, increase 1 stitch by working it twisted from the horizontal strand = 158 (170–182) stitches.
Then, between the edge stitches, work the main pattern with needles size 3.5 mm (US 4): once from c (h–d) to b, 5 (6–6) pattern repeats, and once from a to c (i–e).
After 19¼ (19–18½) in = 162 (160–156) rows from the border, for the armholes bind off 4 (5–7) stitches on both sides, then in every 2nd row bind off 3 (4–4) times 2 stitches each and 5 (5–6) times 1 stitch each = 128 (134–140) stitches.
After 8¾ (9–9½) in = 74 (76–80) rows from the beginning of the armholes, for the neckline bind off the center 26 stitches and finish each side separately.
From the inner edge, bind off for rounding the neckline in every 2nd row: 1 time 9 stitches, 1 time 5 stitches, then bind off the remaining 37 (40–43) stitches of the shoulder.
Front:
Work the same as the back, but with a deeper neckline.
To do this, after 5 (5½–6) in = 44 (46–50) rows from the beginning of the armholes, bind off the center 14 stitches, and from the inner edge for the neckline bind off in every 2nd row: 1 time 5 stitches, 1 time 3 stitches, 2 times 2 stitches, 8 times 1 stitch.
After 36 rows from the beginning of the neckline, bind off the remaining 37 (40–43) stitches of the shoulder.
Sleeves:
With needles size 3 mm (US 2½) cast on 52 stitches and work the border the same as for the back.
In the following Wrong Side Row, increase 20 times alternately after 2 stitches and 3 stitches by working 1 twisted stitch from the horizontal strand = 72 stitches.
Then, between the edge stitches, work the main pattern with needles size 3.5 mm (US 4): once from f to b, once from a to b, and once from a to g.
For the sleeve shaping, increase 1 stitch on both sides in the 3rd row from the border, then 24 (24–22) times in every 4th row and 5 (8–13) times in every 2nd row, including the increased stitches in the pattern = 132 (138–144) stitches.
Work yarn overs only if stitches are worked together for them, and vice versa.
After 13¾ (14¼–14½) in = 116 (120–122) rows from the border, for the sleeve cap bind off on both sides 5 stitches, then in every 2nd row bind off 1 time 3 stitches, 2 times 2 stitches, 14 (16–18) times 1 stitch, 3 times 2 stitches, 2 times 3 stitches, 1 time 4 stitches, 1 time 5 stitches, 1 time 7 stitches, and finally bind off the remaining 24 (26–28) stitches.
Finishing:
Sew the seams.
For the border along the neckline, pick up 114 stitches with circular needles and work as follows: 1 row purl stitches and 5 rows knit stitches; 1 row alternating *knit 2 stitches together, yarn over*; 5 rows knit stitches, then bind off all stitches.
Fold the border in half to the inside and sew down.
