Ribbing Pattern: Alternately work 1 knit stitch and 1 purl stitch.

Stocking Stitch:
Right-side rows: knit stitches.
Wrong-side rows: purl stitches.

Lace Pattern (Main Pattern): Multiple of 9 stitches.
Work according to Chart 1, which shows right-side rows only.
On wrong-side rows, work the stitches as they appear and purl the yarn overs.
Begin with the stitches before the pattern repeat, repeat the pattern repeat throughout, and end with the stitches after the pattern repeat.
Repeat Rows 1 through 4 throughout.

Cable Panel (over 13 stitches):
Work as for the Main Pattern, but follow Chart 2.
Repeat Rows 1 through 10 throughout.

Zigzag Pattern (over 11 stitches):
Work as for the Main Pattern, but follow Chart 3.
Repeat Rows 1 through 28 throughout.

Center Pattern (over 27 stitches):
Work as for the Main Pattern, but follow Chart 4.
Repeat Rows 1 through 14 throughout.

Average Gauge: 27.5 stitches and 35.5 rows = 10 x 10 cm (4 x 4 inches).

Back:
Cast on 149 (167) stitches and work as follows: 1 edge stitch, 36 (45) stitches Main Pattern, 13 stitches Cable Panel, 11 stitches Zigzag Pattern, 27 stitches Center Pattern, 11 stitches Zigzag Pattern, 13 stitches Cable Panel, 36 (45) stitches Main Pattern, 1 edge stitch.
After 59 cm (23.2 inches) = 210 rows from the cast-on edge, bind off the center 23 stitches for the neckline and finish each side separately.
For the neckline shaping, bind off 4 stitches twice and 3 stitches twice at the inside edge in every second row.
After 62 cm (24.4 inches) = 220 rows from the cast-on edge, bind off the remaining 49 (58) stitches of each shoulder.

Front:
Work as for the Back, but with a deeper neckline and, for the top, a V-neck.
For the sweater neckline, after 55 cm (21.7 inches) = 196 rows from the cast-on edge, bind off the center 15 stitches, then bind off 4 stitches once, 3 stitches twice, 2 stitches three times, and 1 stitch twice in every second row.
For the V-neck of the top, after 45 cm (17.7 inches) = 160 rows from the cast-on edge, bind off the center 3 stitches, then bind off 2 stitches once and 1 stitch 17 times in every second row, then 1 stitch 5 times in every fourth row.

Sleeves for the Sweater:
Cast on 58 (64) stitches and work 2.5 cm (1 inch) in Ribbing Pattern. In the last row, increase 27 (21) stitches evenly = 85 stitches.
Then arrange the stitches as follows: 1 edge stitch, 4 stitches Stocking Stitch, 18 stitches Main Pattern, 3 Cable Panels = 39 stitches, 18 stitches Main Pattern, 4 stitches Stocking Stitch, 1 edge stitch.
For the sleeve shaping, increase 1 stitch at each side 32 times in every fourth row from the ribbing, incorporating the increased stitches into the pattern = 149 stitches.
After 37 cm (14.6 inches) = 132 rows from the ribbing, bind off all stitches.

Finishing:
Join the shoulder seams.
Using the circular needle, pick up 112 stitches around the sweater neckline, work 2.5 cm (1 inch) in Ribbing Pattern, then bind off the stitches in pattern.
Set in the sleeves and join the side and sleeve seams.
Join the side seams of the top, leaving the upper 24 cm (9.5 inches) open for the armholes.
Crochet around the lower edge of both the top and the sweater with 4 rows of single crochet and 1 row of picots (= * 3 single crochet, 3 chain stitches, 1 single crochet worked into the first chain stitch; repeat from * throughout).
Work the neckline and armholes of the top in the same way.
At the point of the V-neck, decrease 4 stitches in the second and fourth rounds by working 2 stitches together.
