Lace Cable Vest
How to knit the Lace Cable Vest:
Sizes: US 12/14 – UK 14/16, US 16/18 – UK 18/20 and US 22/24 – UK 24/26.
Materials:
650 (700/750) g yarn (100% pure wool; 120 yards/50 g – 110 meters/50 g); knitting needles size US 2½ and US 4 (UK 12 and 10); 7 buttons.
Ribbing Pattern, needles size US 2½ (UK 12): *Knit 1, purl 1*, repeat from * to * across the row.
Lace Cable Pattern (main pattern, needles size US 4 / UK 10):
Work according to the chart, which shows both right-side and wrong-side rows.
The pattern repeat consists of 10 stitches.
Repeat the pattern between the edge stitches throughout.
Repeat rows 1–10 continuously.
Gauge: 19 stitches and 30 rows = 4 x 4 in (10 x 10 cm).
Back:
Cast on 112 (122/132) stitches and work 1½ in (4 cm) in Ribbing Pattern.
Then continue in the main pattern as follows: 1 edge stitch, 11 (12/13) pattern repeats, 1 edge stitch.
At 17 in (43 cm) from the cast-on edge — after the 6th pattern row — for the armhole borders, work the 6 stitches of the first and last leaf in Ribbing Pattern = 120 (130/140) stitches.
At 26½ (26¾/27¼) in [67 (68/69) cm] for the shoulder slopes, bind off at each side the stitches of the border and the adjacent pattern stitches, then bind off 4 times ½ pattern repeat every other row (then 3 times ½ and 1 time 1 full repeat / or 4 times ¾ repeat depending on size).
At the same time, at 26¾ (27¼/27½) in [68 (69/70) cm] for the neckline, bind off for sizes 42/44 and 52/54 the center 3 pattern repeats, then bind off on each side 2 times ½ repeat every other row. For size 46/48 bind off the center 2 repeats, then 1 time 1 and 1 time ½ repeat at each side every other row.
Left Front:
Cast on 64 (69/74) stitches and work 1½ in (4 cm) in Ribbing Pattern, starting the first row (wrong side) after the edge stitch with 1 purl stitch.
Continue as follows: 1 edge stitch, 5 (5/6) pattern repeats, from the 1st to 3rd (1st to 8th / 1st to 3rd) stitch of the pattern repeat, 9 stitches in Ribbing Pattern for the front border, 1 edge stitch.
At 17 in (43 cm), for the armhole border at the right edge, work as for the back = 68 (73/78) stitches.
At 17¾ (18/18½) in [45 (46/47) cm], for the neckline shaping, knit together the first stitch of the border and the previous stitch. Repeat this decrease alternately every 2nd and 4th row 14 more times, then every 4th row 7 more times.
Important: In the leaf pattern next to the border, make one additional decrease for each yarn over to keep the neckline edge straight.
At 26¾ (27¼/27½) in [68 (69/70) cm], shape the shoulder slope as on the back.
Work 4¾ in (12 cm) more in Ribbing Pattern on the remaining 11 border stitches, then bind off.
Right Front:
Work symmetrically, but at ¾ in (2 cm) from the cast-on edge, make the first buttonhole, then make the next 6 buttonholes spaced 2¾ in (7 cm) apart.
For each buttonhole, bind off the 5th to 7th stitches from the right edge and cast them on again in the next row.
Begin the main pattern after the edge stitch and 9 border stitches with the 8th (3rd/8th) stitch of the pattern repeat.
For neckline decreases, slip the last stitch of the border as if to knit, knit the next stitch, and pass the slipped stitch over.
Finishing:
Sew the seams.
Sew the ends of the front borders together and attach the border neatly around the neckline.
Sew on the buttons.
