Lace and Diagonal Stitch Sweater

How to knit the Lace and Diagonal Stitch Sweater:
Sizes: US 6/8 (US 14/16), UK 10/12 (UK 18/20), EU 36/38 (42/44)
Materials:
700 (800) g yarn (100% cotton; 115 (115) yards per 1.76 ounces); US 2½ (3.0 mm) and US 4 (3.5 mm) knitting needles, and US 2½ (3.0 mm) circular knitting needles.

Ribbing Pattern: Alternate 1 knit stitch and 1 purl stitch.

Reverse Stocking Stitch: right-side rows purl stitches, wrong-side rows knit stitches.

Cable (over 6 stitches):
Row 1 (right side): knit stitches.
Row 2 and every following even-numbered row: purl stitches.
Row 3: 2 knit stitches, cross 4 stitches to the left (= slip 2 stitches onto a cable needle and hold in front of work, knit 2, then knit the stitches from the cable needle).
Row 5: knit stitches.
Row 7: cross 4 stitches to the right (= slip 2 stitches onto a cable needle and hold behind work, knit 2, then knit the stitches from the cable needle), 2 knit stitches.
Repeat Rows 1–8 throughout.

Lace Zigzag Pattern (over 8 stitches):
Work according to Chart 1, which shows right-side rows only.
On wrong-side rows, work the stitches as they appear; purl the yarn overs.
Repeat Rows 1–20 throughout.


Diagonal Pattern A:
Multiple of 5 stitches + 1.
Work according to Chart 2, which shows right-side rows only.
On wrong-side rows, work the stitches as they appear.
Repeat the pattern throughout and end with 1 stitch after the pattern repeat.
Repeat Rows 1–10 throughout.

Diagonal Pattern B:
Work according to Chart 3, which shows right-side rows only.
On wrong-side rows, work the stitches as they appear.
Begin with 1 stitch before the pattern repeat and repeat the pattern throughout.
Repeat Rows 1–10 throughout.

Gauge: 26.5 stitches and 31.5 rows = 4 x 4 inches (10 x 10 cm).

Back:
Using US 2½ (3.0 mm) needles, cast on 122 (150) stitches and work as follows: 1 edge stitch, 49 (63) stitches in Ribbing Pattern, 8 stitches in Lace Zigzag Pattern, 6 stitches in Cable Pattern, 8 stitches in Lace Zigzag Pattern, beginning with Row 11, 49 (63) stitches in Ribbing Pattern, 1 edge stitch.
After 2⅜ inches (6 cm), in the last row increase 14 stitches evenly across the ribbed sections = 136 (164) stitches.
Change to US 4 (3.5 mm) needles and continue as follows: 1 edge stitch, 3 stitches in Reverse Stocking Stitch, * 6 stitches in Cable Pattern, 8 stitches in Lace Zigzag Pattern, repeat from * once (twice) more, 2 stitches in Reverse Stocking Stitch, 21 stitches in Diagonal Pattern A, 2 stitches in Reverse Stocking Stitch, 8 stitches in Lace Zigzag Pattern, 6 stitches in Cable Pattern, 8 stitches in Lace Zigzag Pattern, 2 stitches in Reverse Stocking Stitch, 21 stitches in Diagonal Pattern B, 2 stitches in Reverse Stocking Stitch, * 8 stitches in Lace Zigzag Pattern, 6 stitches in Cable Pattern, repeat from * once (twice) more, 3 stitches in Reverse Stocking Stitch, 1 edge stitch.
In the centre of the back begin the Lace Zigzag Pattern with Row 11.
At 15 inches (38 cm) = 120 rows from the ribbing, bind off 10 stitches at each side for the armholes = 116 (144) stitches.
Continue straight.
At 24½ inches (62 cm) = 196 rows from the ribbing, bind off the centre 50 stitches for the neckline and finish each side separately.
For neck shaping, bind off at the inside edge in every second row 3 stitches twice, 2 stitches twice and 1 stitch once.
At 26 inches (66 cm) = 208 rows from the ribbing, bind off the remaining 22 (36) stitches of each shoulder.

Front:
Work as for the Back, but with a deeper neckline.
For this, at 23¼ inches (59 cm) = 186 rows from the ribbing, slip the centre 38 stitches onto a spare needle and finish each side separately.
For neck shaping, bind off at the inside edge in every second row 3 stitches twice, 2 stitches four times and 1 stitch three times.
Bind off the remaining 22 (36) shoulder stitches at the same height as for the Back.

Sleeves:
Using US 2½ (3.0 mm) needles, cast on 50 stitches and work 2 inches (5 cm) in Ribbing Pattern, increasing 40 stitches evenly across the last row = 90 stitches.
Change to US 4 (3.5 mm) needles and continue as follows: 1 edge stitch, 8 stitches in Lace Zigzag Pattern, 2 stitches in Reverse Stocking Stitch, 21 stitches in Diagonal Pattern A, 2 stitches in Reverse Stocking Stitch, 8 stitches in Lace Zigzag Pattern, 6 stitches in Cable Pattern, 8 stitches in Lace Zigzag Pattern beginning with Row 11, 2 stitches in Reverse Stocking Stitch, 21 stitches in Diagonal Pattern B, 2 stitches in Reverse Stocking Stitch, 8 stitches in Lace Zigzag Pattern beginning with Row 11, 1 edge stitch.
For the sleeve shaping, beginning at the ribbing, increase 1 stitch at each side 29 times in every fourth row = 148 stitches.
At 15¾ inches (40 cm) = 126 rows from the ribbing, bind off all stitches.

Finishing:
Join the shoulder seams.
Using the circular needle, pick up 118 stitches around the neckline and place the 38 held stitches back onto the needle.
Work all 156 stitches as follows: continue the centre 22 stitches in pattern, work Ribbing Pattern on both sides.
After the neckband measures 2 inches (5 cm), bind off all stitches in pattern.
Join the side and sleeve seams, leaving the upper 1⅜ inches (3.5 cm) of each sleeve seam open. Set in the sleeves.
