Ladies Striped Turtleneck Pullover
Directions are given for size 10 with changes for sizes 12, 14 and 16 in parentheses.
Materials needed are about 8 (8, 10, 12) ounces blue sport weight yarn, 2 ounces each (all sixes) camel and white, numbers 3 and 5 standard knitting needles; 1 set number 3 double pointed needles.
Abbreviations:
k - knit
st - stitch
dec - decrease
psso - pass slip stitch over
p - purl
sl - slip
inc - increase
tog - together
Gauge: 6 sts equal 1 inch; 8 rows equal 1 inch.
STRIPE PATTERN: First row of each color change, work as follows: K 1, * sl 1, k 1 repeat from * across. P one row, k one row, p one row. Each stripe is made up of these 4 rows with 2 blue rows in between stripes. REMEMBER: WHEN CHANGING TO BLUE TO WORK FIRST ROW WITH THE SL ST SAME AS WHEN CHANGING TO COLOR STRIPES.
The 4th stripe pattern that starts just before armhole shaping consists of 4 rows of blue after white stripe, 4 rows blue before last white stripe. Work 14 rows blue between each color stripe pattern.
Sweater is made up of 2 camel stripe patterns; 3 white stripe patterns; 2 camel stripe patterns, 1 white, 1 blue, 2 camel, 1 blue and 1 white and 2 camel stripe patterns which are worked in this sequence. Always there will be 2 blue rows between camel stripes.
BACK: With number 3 needles and blue, cast on 103 (107, 111, 117) sts, work 2 1/2 inches k l , p 1 ribbing.
Change to number 5 needles, work in stockinette (k 1 row, p 1 row) for 1 1/2 (1 1/2, 2, 2 1/2) inches. Work stripe patterns and work until piece measures 12 (12, 12 1/2, 13) inches or desired length to armhole.
Armhole: Bind off 3 (3, 3, 3) sts at beginning of next 2 rows. Continue to work stripe patterns. Keep sl st even when working dec's as follows:
Row l: K 1, k 2 tog, k to last 3 sts, sl 1, k 1, psso, k 1.
Row 2: P.
Continue to work dec's repeating rows 1 and 2 until 34 (35, 37, 40) more dec's have been made. Sl remaining 29 (31, 31, 31) sts to holder for back of neck.
FRONT: Work same as back until 24 ( 25, 27, 30) dec's have been worked  - 49 (51, 51, 51) sts. Sl center 17 (19, 19, 19) sts to holder for center front. Join another skein of yarn and work both sides at same time. Dec 1 st each side of center front on k rows 6 (6, 6, 6) times, AT SAME TIME, continue raglan dec's until no sts are left.
SLEEVES: With number 3 needles and blue, cast on 47 (47, 49, 51) sts. Work ribbing same as back for 3 inches. Change to number 5 needles, work in stockinette, inc 1 st each end of needle every inch 13 (14, 14, 14) times - 73 (75, 77, 79) sts. Match stripes in sleeves to front and back of sweater by adding the number of inches of blue before first stripe on sleeve. Work until sleeve measures 16 1/2 (17, 17 1/2, 18) inches or desired length to armhole. Bind off 3 (3, 3, 3) sts at beginning of next 2 rows. Dec 1 st each end of needle every other k row 4 (4, 6, 7) times (dec is every 4th row). Then dec 1 st each end of needle every k row 26 (27, 27, 26) times. Sl remaining 7 sts to holder.
Finishing: Sew sleeves to front and back pieces, sew underarm and sleeve seams.
Turtleneck: With double pointed needles, pick up and k approximately 88 (94, 94, 94) sts around neck edge including sts from holders. Divide sta on three needles, k 1, p 1 around in ribbing until it measures 5 1/2 inches or desired number of inches for turtleneck. Bind off sts loosely in ribbing. Work in ends, block.
