Fitted Cardigan in Vertical Textured Stitch
How to knit Cardigan with Vertical Relief Pattern:
Size: US size: 6–8 (10–12) UK size: 10–12 (14–16)
Materials:
450 (550) g yarn (approximately 16 (19.5) oz; 70 percent cotton, 30 percent microfiber, 90 m per 50 g); knitting needles size 6 mm (US 10); circular needles size 5.5 mm (US 9); 6 buttons.
Garter stitch: knit all stitches on right-side and wrong-side rows.
Relief pattern with wrapped stitches: number of stitches divisible by 13 + 1 + 2 edge stitches.
Work according to the chart, which shows right-side rows only.
On wrong-side rows, work the stitches as they appear, purl the yarn overs.
Begin with 1 edge stitch and the stitches before the repeat, repeat the pattern repeat throughout, end with the stitches after the repeat and 1 edge stitch.
Repeat rows 1 to 4 throughout.
Gauge: 18 stitches and 23 rows = 10 x 10 cm (4 x 4 inches).
Back:
Cast on 69 (79) stitches and for the lower band work 1.5 cm = 4 rows (approximately 0.6 inches) in garter stitch, increasing evenly 12 (15) stitches in the last wrong-side row = 81 (94) stitches.
Continue in the relief pattern with wrapped stitches.
For armholes, after 31.5 cm = 72 rows (33 cm = 76 rows) from the band, bind off on both sides 4 stitches once, then on every second row bind off 3 stitches once and 1 stitch twice = 63 (76) stitches.
For neckline, after 48.5 cm = 112 rows (52 cm = 120 rows) from the band, bind off the middle 25 (28) stitches and finish both sides separately.
For shaping, bind off at the inner edge 4 stitches once, 3 stitches once and 1 stitch once.
After 52 cm = 120 rows (55.5 cm = 128 rows) from the band (approximately 20.5 (22) inches), bind off the remaining 11 (16) stitches for each shoulder.
Left front:
Cast on 34 (39) stitches and work the band as for the back, increasing evenly 6 (7) stitches in the last wrong-side row = 40 (46) stitches.
Continue in the relief pattern with wrapped stitches, beginning with 1 edge stitch and the stitches before the repeat, work 2 (3) repeats, end with the first 7 (0) stitches of the repeat and 1 edge stitch.
Work the armhole at the right edge as for the back = 31 (37) stitches.
For neckline, after 46 cm = 106 rows (49.5 cm = 114 rows) from the band, bind off 8 (9) stitches once, then on every second row bind off 4 stitches once, 3 stitches once, 2 stitches once and 1 stitch three times.
Bind off the remaining 11 (16) stitches at the same height as the back.
Right front: work as for left front.
Sleeves:
Cast on 36 (40) stitches and work the band as for the back, increasing evenly 6 (8) stitches in the last wrong-side row = 42 (48) stitches.
Continue in the relief pattern with wrapped stitches, beginning with 1 edge stitch and the last 5 (8) stitches of the repeat, work 2 repeats, end with the first 9 (12) stitches of the repeat and 1 edge stitch.
For sleeve shaping, from the band increase on both sides 1 stitch nine times on every eighth row = 60 (66) stitches.
For sleeve cap, after 35 cm = 80 rows (approximately 13.75 inches) from the band, bind off on both sides 3 stitches once, then on every second row bind off 1 stitch twice, on every fourth row bind off 1 stitch four times, and again on every second row bind off 1 stitch twice, 2 stitches once, 3 stitches twice and 4 stitches once.
After 49.5 cm = 114 rows (approximately 19.5 inches) from the band, bind off the remaining 14 (20) stitches.
Finishing:
Pick up 78 (84) stitches along each straight front edge and work the band in garter stitch, beginning with 1 wrong-side row.
On the right band make 6 buttonholes as follows: in the third row bind off 2 stitches and cast them on again in the following row.
Work the lowest buttonhole 3 stitches from the lower edge, the following buttonholes at intervals of 12 (13) stitches.
After 5 rows of band height, bind off all stitches.
Sew shoulder seams.
Pick up 94 (98) stitches along the neckline edge and the narrow band edge using circular needles and work in garter stitch.
After 5 rows, bind off all stitches knitwise.
Set in sleeves. Sew side seams and sleeve seams.
Sew on buttons.
