Cardigan with Wide Bands
How to knit the cardigan with wide bands:
Size: EU 38 (US 6, UK 10)
Materials:
900 g yarn (52% merino wool, 48% acrylic, 125 m/100 g); knitting needles 5 mm and 6 mm (US 8 and US 10); 4 snap fasteners; 30 cm (12 inches) elastic tape; tapestry needle.
Tubular Ribbing:
With contrast yarn, cast on half of the required number of stitches;
Row 1: with working yarn work * 1 stitch knit, 1 yarn over *, repeat from * to *;
Row 2: * work the yarn over knit, slip 1 stitch as if to purl, yarn in front *, repeat from * to *;
Row 3 and all following rows: * 1 stitch knit, slip 1 stitch as if to purl, yarn in front *, repeat from * to *;
after finishing the piece, remove the contrast yarn.
Ribbing Pattern 1/1: alternately 1 stitch knit, 1 stitch purl.
Main Pattern:
Row 1: all stitches knit;
Rows 2 to 6: * 1 stitch knit, 1 patent stitch (= insert the needle into the stitch of the row below and work it knit, the stitch of the previous row drops) *, repeat from * to *;
Rows 7 to 12: * 1 patent stitch, 1 stitch knit *, repeat from * to *;
Rows 13 to 18: work as Row 2;
Row 19: repeat the pattern starting from Row 7.
Gauge, main pattern: 13 stitches and 30 rows = 10 x 10 cm (4 x 4 inches).
Back:
Cast on 91 stitches and work 4 rows of hollow ribbing and 12 rows of Ribbing Pattern 1/1.
Then continue with 6 mm (US 10) needles in the main pattern, working 1 edge stitch on each side and evenly decreasing 30 stitches in Row 1.
At 43 cm (17 inches) from the cast-on edge, bind off 2 stitches once on each side for the armhole shaping.
At 58 cm (22.75 inches) from the cast-on edge, bind off the remaining 59 stitches.
Right Front:
Cast on 59 stitches and work 4 rows of hollow ribbing and 12 rows of Ribbing Pattern 1/1, working the first 3 stitches in hollow ribbing.
Then with 6 mm (US 10) needles work 3 stitches in hollow ribbing, 21 stitches in Ribbing Pattern 1/1 following the pattern (center band), and 23 stitches in the main pattern, evenly decreasing 12 stitches in Row 1.
To balance the length of the center band and the section worked in the main pattern, work 2 short rows every 10 rows as follows:
Row 1: work 23 stitches in the main pattern, turn;
Row 2: work 23 stitches in the main pattern, turn;
Rows 3 to 10: work all 47 stitches following the pattern;
Row 11: repeat the pattern starting from Row 1.
At 36 cm (14.25 inches) from the cast-on edge, work 2 short rows every 6 rows as follows:
Row 1: work 23 stitches in the main pattern, turn;
Row 2: work 23 stitches in the main pattern, turn;
Rows 3 to 6: work all 47 stitches following the pattern;
Row 7: repeat the pattern starting from Row 1.
At 43 cm (17 inches) from the cast-on edge, bind off 2 stitches once at the left edge for the armhole shaping.
At 58 cm (22.75 inches) from the cast-on edge, bind off the remaining 45 stitches.
Left Front: work symmetrically.
Sleeve:
With 5 mm (US 8) needles, cast on 45 stitches and work 4 rows of double ribbing and 12 rows of Ribbing Pattern 1/1.
Change to 6 mm (US 10) needles and continue in the main pattern, evenly decreasing 6 stitches in Row 1.
At 48 cm (19 inches) from the cast-on edge, bind off the remaining 39 stitches.
Finishing:
Work the shoulder seams.
For the collar, with 6 mm (US 10) needles pick up 145 stitches along the neckline of the fronts and back and work as follows: 3 stitches hollow ribbing, 21 stitches Ribbing Pattern 1/1, 97 stitches main pattern, 21 stitches Ribbing Pattern 1/1, 3 stitches double ribbing.
Work 2 short rows every 6 rows as for the fronts.
After 15 cm (6 inches), work all stitches in double ribbing and bind off all stitches.
Thread the elastic tape through the stitches of the double ribbing.
Set in the sleeves, work sleeve seams and side seams.
Sew on the snap fasteners, the first at 5 cm (2 inches) from the lower edge of the fronts, the others at intervals of 15 cm (6 inches).
