Cardigan with Openwork Cables

How to knit the cardigan with openwork cables:
Size: UK 10/12 (US 6/8)
Materials:
750 g (26.5 oz) yarn (100% merino wool, 158 m/50 g / approx. 173 yd/50 g); circular needles 3 mm (US 2½) and 3.5 mm (US 4); 8 buttons.
Ribbing Pattern, needles 3 mm (US 2½): work alternately 1 knit stitch, 1 purl stitch.
All following patterns are worked with needles 3.5 mm (US 4).
Openwork Cable A (pattern width 18 stitches):
Work according to the chart, which shows only right-side rows.
On wrong-side rows, work the stitches as they appear, purl the yarn overs.
Work rows 1 to 10 a total of 15 times, then repeat rows 11 to 60.
Openwork Cable B (pattern width 18 stitches):
Work as Openwork Cable A, but work rows 1 to 10 a total of 13 times.
Openwork Cable C (pattern width 18 stitches):
Work as Openwork Cable A, but work rows 1 to 10 once.
Openwork Cable D (pattern width 18 stitches):
Work as Openwork Cable A, but work rows 1 to 10 a total of 3 times.
Average gauge:
Openwork Cables A and B: 31.5 stitches and 37 rows = 10 x 10 cm (4 x 4 in);
Openwork Cables C and D: 26 stitches and 37 rows = 10 x 10 cm (4 x 4 in).
Back:
Cast on 160 stitches and work 3 cm (1.2 in) in Ribbing Pattern, evenly increase 22 stitches in the last row = 182 stitches.
Then arrange the stitches as follows: 1 edge stitch, * 18 stitches Openwork Cable A, 18 stitches Openwork Cable B, repeat from * 4 more times, 1 edge stitch.
After 35 cm (13.8 in) = 130 rows from the ribbing, bind off 17 stitches on each side for the armholes = 148 stitches.
After 60 cm (23.6 in) = 222 rows from the ribbing, bind off the center 28 stitches for the neckline and finish both sides separately.
For the neckline shaping, bind off at the inner edge in every second row 5 stitches once and 3 stitches twice.
After 62 cm (24.4 in) = 230 rows from the ribbing, bind off the remaining 49 shoulder stitches.

Cardigan with Openwork Cables
Left front:
Cast on 80 stitches and work 3 cm (1.2 in) in Ribbing Pattern, evenly increase 12 stitches in the last row = 92 stitches.
Then arrange the stitches as follows: 1 edge stitch, * 18 stitches Openwork Cable A, 18 stitches Openwork Cable B, repeat from * once more, 18 stitches Openwork Cable A, 1 edge stitch.
Work the armhole decreases at the right edge as for the back = 75 stitches.
After 55 cm (21.7 in) = 204 rows from the ribbing, bind off at the left edge for the neckline 12 stitches once, then in every second row 4 stitches once, 2 stitches twice, and 1 stitch 6 times.
Right front:
Work symmetrically to the left front and begin with Openwork Cable B after the ribbing.
Sleeves:
Cast on 54 stitches for each sleeve and work 3 cm (1.2 in) in Ribbing Pattern, evenly increase 14 stitches in the last row = 68 stitches.
Then arrange the stitches as follows: 1 edge stitch, last 6 stitches Openwork Cable C, 18 stitches Openwork Cable D, 18 stitches Openwork Cable C, 18 stitches Openwork Cable D, first 6 stitches Openwork Cable C, 1 edge stitch.
For the sleeve shaping, increase on both sides starting from the ribbing 1 stitch 7 times in every 6th row and 1 stitch 29 times in every 4th row, working the increased stitches into the pattern = 140 stitches.
After 48 cm (18.9 in) = 178 rows from the ribbing, bind off all stitches.
Finishing:
Work the shoulder seams.
Pick up 162 stitches along each vertical front edge and work in Ribbing Pattern.
After 1.5 cm (0.6 in), work 7 buttonholes in the right front band (bind off 3 stitches and cast them on again in the next row); work the first buttonhole 5 stitches from the lower edge, space the remaining buttonholes 20 stitches apart.
After 3 cm (1.2 in), bind off all stitches as they appear.
Pick up 143 stitches along the neckline and the short sides of the front band and work in Ribbing Pattern; after 1.5 cm (0.6 in), leave 4 stitches from the right edge and work the last buttonhole.
At a band height of 3 cm (1.2 in), bind off all stitches as they appear.
Set in the sleeves, work the side seams and sleeve seams.
Sew on the buttons.
