Cardigan with Leaf Pattern
How to knit the Cardigan with Leaf Pattern:
Sizes: UK 10 (12) 14 / US 6 (8) 10
Materials:
650 g yarn (50% cotton, 50% polyacrylic, 142 yds/1.76 oz); circular knitting needles US 1.5 and 4 / UK 13 and 8; 6 buttons.
Ribbing Pattern, smaller needles: alternate 1 knit stitch, 1 purl stitch.
All following patterns are worked with larger needles.
Openwork Vertical Stripe:
Row 1 (right side): * k2tog, yo, p4, repeat from *.
Rows 2 and 4: work the stitches as they appear, purl the yarn overs.
Row 3: * yo, k2tog, p4, repeat from *.
Repeat these 4 rows throughout.
Leaf Pattern (over 26 stitches):
Work according to chart, which shows right-side rows only.
On wrong-side rows, work all stitches as they appear, purl the yarn overs.
Repeat Rows 1–16 throughout.
Pattern sequence for back or left front: * 1 edge stitch, 23 (26) 29 stitches Openwork Vertical Stripe, for Size 12 begin with p3, 26 stitches Leaf Pattern **, 62 or respectively 30 stitches Openwork Vertical Stripe, beginning with p3, finish symmetrically from ** to *, 1 edge stitch.
Gauge: 28 stitches and 30 rows = 4 x 4 in (10 x 10 cm).
Back:
Cast on 120 (124) 128 stitches and work 2.75 in (7 cm) in Ribbing Pattern, in the last row increase 42 (44) 46 stitches evenly = 162 (168) 174 stitches.
Continue in pattern sequence.
After 23.25 (23.25) 23.5 in (59 (59) 60 cm) from cast-on edge, for neckline bind off the center 14 stitches and finish both sides separately.
For neckline shaping bind off at inner edge in every 2nd row 1 x 8 stitches and 1 x 7 stitches.
After 24 (24) 24.5 in (61 (61) 62 cm) from cast-on edge bind off remaining shoulder stitches.
Left Front:
Cast on 60 (62) 64 stitches and work 2.75 in (7 cm) in Ribbing Pattern, in the last row increase 21 (22) 23 stitches evenly = 81 (84) 87 stitches.
Continue in pattern sequence.
After 13.75 in (35 cm) from cast-on edge, for neckline at inner edge bind off 1 stitch, then in every 4th row 16 (16) 18 x 1 stitch and in every 2nd row 5 (5) 3 x 1 stitch.
Bind off remaining shoulder stitches at same height as back.
Right Front: work symmetrically.
Sleeves:
Cast on 50 stitches for each sleeve and work 2.75 in (7 cm) in Ribbing Pattern, in the last row increase 20 stitches evenly = 70 stitches.
Then work as follows: 1 edge stitch, 31 stitches Openwork Vertical Stripe beginning with p2, 26 stitches Leaf Pattern, 31 stitches Openwork Vertical Stripe beginning with p3, 1 edge stitch.
At the same time for sleeve shaping increase on both sides 1 (1) 0 x 1 stitch in every 6th row, 27 x 1 stitch in every 4th row and 0 (0) 4 x 1 stitch in every 2nd row, incorporating increased stitches into Openwork Vertical Stripe pattern.
After 18.5 in (47 cm) from cast-on edge bind off all stitches.
Finishing:
Join shoulder seams.
Along neckline and vertical front edges pick up 407 (407) 419 stitches with circular needle and work 0.75 in (2 cm) in Ribbing Pattern, then bind off all stitches in pattern.
At the same time on right front after 0.4 in (1 cm), evenly work 6 buttonholes between lower edge and beginning of neckline (= bind off 2 stitches without working them and immediately cast on 2 new stitches).
Set in sleeves, matching center of sleeve with shoulder seam.
Join side and sleeve seams.
Sew on buttons.
