Cardigan with Diagonal Pattern
How to knit the Cardigan with Diagonal Pattern:
Sizes: US 6/8 (10/12), UK 10/12 (14/16), European 36/38 (40/42)
Materials:
500 (550) g yarn (55% cotton, 45% acrylic, 109 yards/50 g), straight and circular knitting needles size 7 US / 4.5 mm, crochet hook size G-6 US / 4 mm.
Stockinette Stitch: knit stitches on right-side rows and purl stitches on wrong-side rows.
Reverse Stockinette Stitch: purl stitches on right-side rows and knit stitches on wrong-side rows.
Diagonal Pattern slanting to the right: number of stitches divisible by 8 + 4 (6) stitches.
Work according to chart 1, which shows only right-side rows.
On wrong-side rows, purl all stitches and yarn overs.
Begin with the stitches at arrow A (B), repeat the pattern repeat throughout.
Work rows 1 through 20 once, then continuously repeat rows 13 through 20.
Diagonal Pattern slanting to the left: number of stitches divisible by 8 + 4 (6) stitches.
Work according to chart 2, which shows only right-side rows.
On wrong-side rows, purl all stitches and yarn overs.
Repeat the pattern repeat throughout and finish at arrow A (B).
Work rows 1 through 20 once, then continuously repeat rows 13 through 20.
Lace Pattern (over 19 stitches):
Work according to chart 3, which shows right-side rows and 2 wrong-side rows.
On all other wrong-side rows, work the stitches as they appear and purl the yarn overs.
Repeat rows 1- 8 throughout.
Pattern distribution over 86 (94) stitches: 1 edge stitch, 12 (14) stitches Diagonal Pattern to the right, 19 stitches Lace Pattern, 22 (26) stitches Stockinette Stitch, 19 stitches Lace Pattern, 12 (14) stitches Diagonal Pattern to the left, 1 edge stitch.
Pattern Sequence 1: 24 rows Stockinette Stitch, 30 rows Diagonal Pattern to the right, beginning with 1 edge stitch and 1 (4) stitches before the pattern repeat, repeat the pattern repeat 6 times, finish with the first stitch (first 4 stitches) of the pattern repeat and 1 edge stitch, then 4 rows Stockinette Stitch, repeat once * 2 rows Reverse Stockinette Stitch, 6 rows Stockinette Stitch *, 2 rows Reverse Stockinette Stitch, 14 rows Stockinette Stitch = 90 rows.
Pattern Sequence 2: 24 rows Stockinette Stitch, 30 rows Diagonal Pattern to the left, beginning with 1 edge stitch and the last stitch (last 4 stitches) of the pattern repeat, repeat the pattern repeat 6 times, finish with the first stitch (first 4 stitches) of the pattern repeat and 1 edge stitch, then 4 rows Stockinette Stitch, repeat once * 2 rows Reverse Stockinette Stitch, 6 rows Stockinette Stitch *, 2 rows Reverse Stockinette Stitch, 14 rows Stockinette Stitch = total 90 rows.
Gauge:
Diagonal Patterns and Stockinette Stitch: 18 stitches and 25 rows = 4 x 4 inches / 10 x 10 cm;
Lace Pattern: 19 stitches and 25 rows = 4 x 4 inches / 10 x 10 cm;
Pattern Sequences 1 and 2: 18 stitches and 25 rows = 4 x 4 inches / 10 x 10 cm.
Cast on 86 (94) stitches using an elastic cast-on and work in pattern distribution.
After 13.25 inches / 33.5 cm = 84 rows (13.75 inches / 35 cm = 88 rows) from the beginning, for the armholes bind off 2 stitches once on both sides, then decrease 1 stitch 8 times in every second row as follows: at the beginning of the row work 1 edge stitch, knit 1 stitch, slip 1 stitch as if to knit, knit 1 stitch and pass the slipped stitch over the knitted stitch; at the end of the row knit 2 stitches together, knit 1 stitch, 1 edge stitch = 66 (74) stitches.
After completing the armholes, work the remaining 2 stitches of the Diagonal Patterns on both sides in Stockinette Stitch.
After 20.5 inches / 52 cm = 130 rows (21.75 inches / 55 cm = 138 rows) from the beginning, for the shoulders bind off 22 (24) stitches once on both sides and leave the middle 22 (26) stitches open.
Left Front:
Cast on 32 (34) stitches using an elastic cast-on and work in pattern distribution, with the last stitch of the Lace Pattern becoming the edge stitch.
Work the armhole on the right edge as for the back = 22 (24) stitches.
At the same height as the back bind off all stitches.
Right Front:
Work as a mirror image, meaning work the last 32 (34) stitches in pattern distribution, with the first stitch of the Lace Pattern becoming the edge stitch.
Left Sleeve:
Cast on 52 (58) stitches using an elastic cast-on and work Pattern Sequence 1.
After 14.25 inches / 36 cm = 90 rows from the beginning, for the sleeve cap continue as follows: 1 edge stitch, knit 1 stitch, knit 2 stitches together (= 1 decrease on the right edge), 22 (25) stitches Diagonal Pattern to the right, beginning with the last 6 stitches of the pattern repeat (with 1 stitch before the pattern repeat), work the pattern repeat 2 (3) times, then 22 (25) stitches Diagonal Pattern to the left, beginning with 1 stitch of the pattern repeat, work the pattern repeat 2 (3) times and finish with 6 stitches of the pattern repeat (1 stitch after the pattern repeat), slip 1 stitch as if to knit, knit 1 stitch and pass the slipped stitch over the knitted stitch (= 1 decrease on the left edge), knit 1 stitch, 1 edge stitch.
Repeat the sleeve cap decreases 5 more times in every second row, 2 times in every fourth row and 8 times in every second row.
In the Diagonal Patterns make sure that the number of yarn overs matches the number of stitches worked together.
After 20 inches / 50.5 cm = 126 rows from the beginning bind off the remaining 20 (26) stitches.
Right Sleeve:
Work as Left Sleeve, but in Pattern Sequence 2.
Finishing:
Join the shoulder seams.
For the collar band place the open 22 (26) stitches of the back onto the circular needle, pick up 94 (99) stitches along each front edge and work Stockinette Stitch over all 210 (224) stitches.
After 4.75 (5.25) inches / 12 (13) cm bind off all stitches.
Join all seams.
For each tie, using the crochet hook attach a doubled thread approximately 11.5 (12.25) inches / 29 (31) cm above the lower edge and crochet a chain measuring 11 inches / 28 cm, work 1 row of slip stitches around it and attach it to the collar band with slip stitches.
