Repeat rows 1–12 throughout.

Gauge:
Stockinette Stitch: 24 stitches and 32 rows = 10 × 10 cm;
Cable Pattern: 44 stitches and 32 rows = 10 × 10 cm.

Back:
Cast on 122 (130) stitches and work 3 cm in ribbing, increasing 2 stitches in the last row for size EU 40/42 (US 10/12, UK 12/14) = 122 (132) stitches.
Continue in the main pattern.
At 16 cm from the cast-on edge, bind off 1 stitch on each side once, then 1 stitch 6 times every 10th row = 108 (118) stitches.
At 40 cm, increase 1 stitch on each side once, then 1 stitch 2 times every 6th row and 1 stitch 6 times every 4th row = 126 (136) stitches.
At 53 cm, shape the armholes by binding off 3 stitches once, 2 stitches once, and 1 stitch 4 times on each side = 108 (118) stitches.
At 76 cm, bind off the center 22 stitches for the neckline, and on each side of them bind off 6 stitches once and 2 stitches once.
At 78 cm, bind off the remaining shoulder stitches.
Cardigan with Cable PatternLeft Front:
Cast on 72 (76) stitches and work 3 cm in ribbing, increasing 1 stitch in the last row for size EU 40/42 = 72 (77) stitches.
Then from the right edge (= side edge) work as follows: 1 edge stitch, 60 (65) stitches in the main pattern, 10 stitches for the front band in ribbing, 1 edge stitch.
From the side edge, decrease 7 stitches and increase 9 stitches again as for the back.
At 46 cm from the cast-on edge, along the front edge next to the band, increase 12 stitches and work these 24 stitches in the cable pattern (= the first 2 stitches of the chart + 1 full repeat).
Work the remaining stitches as before.
At 48 cm, for the front shaping, before the cable pattern, work 2 stitches together once, then 2 stitches together 5 times every 4th row, and alternately 2 stitches together 14 times every 4th and 6th row.
At the same time, when the piece measures 53 cm, shape the armhole from the side edge as on the back.
At 78 cm, bind off the remaining shoulder stitches.

Right Front:
Work as for the left front, but make the first buttonhole after 3 cm, the remaining 5 buttonholes 8.5 cm apart.
For each buttonhole, bind off the 5th and 6th stitches of the band and cast them on again in the next row.
For the front shaping in right-side rows, work as follows: knit together the band stitch and the adjacent cable stitch, then work the first stitch of the main pattern as a slip-slip-pass-over decrease (= slip 1 stitch knitwise, knit the next stitch, and pass the slipped stitch over the knitted one).

Sleeves:
Cast on 54 stitches and work 3 cm in ribbing, evenly increasing 15 stitches in the last row = 69 stitches.
Continue in the main pattern and shape the sleeve by increasing 1 stitch on each side 6 times every 6th row, then 1 stitch 16 times alternately every 4th and 6th row = 113 stitches.
At 41 cm, shape the sleeve cap by binding off 4 stitches once, 2 stitches 5 times, 1 stitch 6 times, 2 stitches 4 times, 3 stitches 2 times, 4 stitches once, and 5 stitches once on each side.
Bind off the remaining stitches.
Work the second sleeve in the same way.

Pockets:
For one pocket, cast on 74 stitches, purl 1 wrong-side row, and work as follows: 1 edge stitch, 2 stitches in stockinette, 68 stitches in cable pattern (= first 2 stitches of the chart + 3 repeats), 2 stitches in stockinette, 1 edge stitch.
At 16 cm, continue in ribbing, evenly decreasing 12 stitches in the first row = 62 stitches.
At 20 cm, bind off all stitches.

Pick up approximately 44 stitches along the back neckline and work 3 cm in ribbing.
