Hooded Knit Jacket for Boys
How to knit a hooded jacket for boys:
Sizes: 5–6 years (7–8 years) 9–10 years
Materials:
500 (550) 550 g yarn (60% cotton, 40% acrylic, yardage 85 m/50 g). Knitting needles size 8 US (5 mm). Separating zipper for jacket, length 14 (15.5) 17 inches.
Stockinette stitch: On right-side rows, knit stitches. On wrong-side rows, purl stitches.
Reverse stockinette stitch: On right-side rows, purl stitches. On wrong-side rows, knit stitches.
Ribbing Pattern: * 3 stitches in stockinette stitch, 3 stitches in reverse stockinette stitch, repeat from * throughout.
Seed stitch: Knit 1 stitch, purl 1 stitch alternately. Shift the pattern in every row.
Gauge:
Seed stitch: 16 stitches and 25 rows = 4 × 4 inches.
Back:
Cast on 69 (73) 77 stitches and work in seed stitch.
After 10 rows from the beginning, cast on an additional 18 stitches for the front pocket lining and continue as follows: work the outer 13 stitches in stockinette stitch, the remaining stitches in seed stitch.
After 34 rows from the beginning, bind off the 18 stitches of the pocket lining.
After 25 (28) 31 cm from the beginning, bind off on both sides for armholes 5 stitches once = 59 (63) 67 stitches.
After 43 (47) 51 cm from the beginning, bind off on both sides 12 (14) 16 stitches for the shoulders and place the central 35 stitches on hold.
Left Front:
Cast on 35 (37) 39 stitches and work in seed stitch.
After 10 rows from the beginning, for the pocket work the first 18 stitches in Ribbing Pattern, starting after the edge stitch with 2 stitches in stockinette stitch.
After 34 rows from the beginning, work all stitches again in seed stitch.
After 25 (28) 31 cm from the beginning, bind off at the right edge for the armhole 5 stitches once = 30 (32) 34 stitches.
At the same time, begin the Ribbing Pattern at the left edge, working the last 3 stitches before the edge stitch in stockinette stitch, and widen the ribbing every 6th row by 3 stitches to the right until the ribbing is worked over 15 stitches plus the edge stitch.
After 43 (47) 51 cm from the beginning, bind off at the right edge 12 (14) 16 stitches for the shoulder and place the remaining 18 stitches on hold.
Right Front: Work in reverse to the left front.
Sleeves:
Cast on 33 (37) 41 stitches and work in the following distribution:
9 (11) 13 stitches in seed stitch, 15 stitches in Ribbing Pattern, 9 (11) 13 stitches in seed stitch.
After 12 (18) 24 rows from the beginning, increase for sleeve shaping on both sides every 4th row 1 stitch 10 times, then every 6th row 1 stitch 2 times = 57 (61) 65 stitches.
After 32 (35) 38 cm from the beginning, bind off all stitches.
Finishing:
Work the shoulder seams.
Place the stitches on hold from the left front, back, and right front onto a needle (= 71 stitches) and work the hood in the following pattern distribution, working 2 stitches together at both shoulders in the first row:
Edge stitch, 15 stitches in Ribbing Pattern, 17 stitches in seed stitch, 3 stitches in stockinette stitch, 17 stitches in seed stitch, 15 stitches in Ribbing Pattern, edge stitch.
For hood shaping, increase in the 7th row and then 9 more times in every following 4th row before and after the 3 central stitches in stockinette stitch, working the increases according to the pattern = 89 stitches.
Then decrease 9 times in every 2nd row before and after the 3 central stitches in stockinette stitch as follows:
Work the first stockinette stitch together with the preceding stitch knitwise, work the third stockinette stitch together with the following stitch through the back loop.
In the next row (approximately 2 cm from the shoulder), bind off the remaining 71 stitches, purling the 3 central stitches together.
Work the top seam of the hood.
Work the remaining seams, leaving the side edges of the pockets open, and sew in the sleeves.
Sew the pocket linings to the inside of the jacket.
Pick up approximately 184 (192) 204 stitches along the edges of the fronts and the hood and work the bands in stockinette stitch to a height of 1¾ inches, then bind off the stitches.
Fold the band in half to the inside and sew in place.
Sew in the zipper invisibly under the front band, starting approximately 2 inches above the lower edge.
With double yarn, work a cord of chain stitches 51 inches long.
Thread the cord above the zipper through one stitch of the hood band.
Knot the ends of the cord.
