Sweater with Diamond Stitch Pattern
How to knit the Sweater with Diamond Stitch Pattern:
Sizes: EU 38–42 (US 8–12 / UK 10–14).
Materials:
600 g wool yarn (1640 yards / 21.2 oz; 150 m / 164 yards per 50 g); knitting needles 3 mm (US 2.5) and 3.5 mm (US 4), and circular needles 3 mm (US 2.5).
Ribbing Pattern, 3 mm needles: alternate 1 knit stitch, 1 purl stitch.
Work all following patterns with 3.5 mm needles.
Reverse Stockinette Stitch: right-side rows – purl stitches, wrong-side rows – knit stitches.
Brioche Pattern:
Row 1 (right side): * slip 1 stitch together with a yarn over as if to purl, purl 1, repeat from *, end by slipping 1 stitch together with a yarn over;
Row 2: * purl the stitch together with its yarn over, slip 1 stitch together with a yarn over, repeat from *, end by purling the stitch together with its yarn over.
Work Rows 1 and 2 once, then repeat Row 2 throughout.
Diamond Pattern (over 19 stitches):
Work according to chart, only right-side rows are shown.
On wrong-side rows, work the stitches as they appear.
Work Rows 1–34 once in height.
Pattern Sequence 1: 172 rows Reverse Stockinette Stitch, 34 rows Diamond Pattern.
Pattern Sequence 2: 134 rows Reverse Stockinette Stitch, 34 rows Diamond Pattern, 38 rows Reverse Stockinette Stitch.
Pattern Sequence 3: 96 rows Reverse Stockinette Stitch, 34 rows Diamond Pattern, 76 rows Reverse Stockinette Stitch.
Pattern Sequence 4: 98 rows Reverse Stockinette Stitch, 34 rows Diamond Pattern, 4 rows Reverse Stockinette Stitch.
Pattern Sequence 5: 60 rows Reverse Stockinette Stitch, 34 rows Diamond Pattern, 42 rows Reverse Stockinette Stitch.
Pattern Sequence 6: 22 rows Reverse Stockinette Stitch, 34 rows Diamond Pattern, 80 rows Reverse Stockinette Stitch.
Gauge: 25 stitches and 35 rows = 10 x 10 cm (4 x 4 inches).
Back:
Cast on 127 stitches and work 9 cm (3.5 inches) in Ribbing Pattern, increasing 24 stitches evenly in the last row = 151 stitches.
Continue in the following distribution: 1 edge stitch, * 9 stitches Brioche Pattern, 19 stitches Pattern Sequence 1, repeat from * 4 times (later replace Pattern Sequence 1 with Pattern Sequences 2, 3, 2 and 1), end with 9 stitches Brioche Pattern and 1 edge stitch.
At a height of 57 cm (22.5 inches) = 200 rows from the ribbing, bind off the middle 27 stitches and finish both sides separately.
For neckline shaping, bind off in every 2nd row 1 time 6 stitches and 1 time 3 stitches.
At a height of 59 cm (23.2 inches) = 206 rows from the ribbing, bind off the remaining 53 stitches.
Front:
Work as for the back, but with a deeper neckline.
For this, at a height of 52 cm (20.5 inches) = 182 rows from the ribbing, bind off the middle 21 stitches and finish both sides separately.
For neckline shaping, bind off in every 2nd row 1 time 4 stitches, 1 time 3 stitches, 1 time 2 stitches and 3 times 1 stitch.
Bind off the remaining stitches at the same height as the back.
Sleeves:
Cast on 50 stitches for each sleeve and work 6 cm (2.4 inches) in Ribbing Pattern, increasing 35 stitches evenly in the last row = 85 stitches.
Continue in the following distribution: 1 edge stitch, 4 stitches Brioche Pattern, * 19 stitches Pattern Sequence 5, 9 stitches Brioche Pattern, repeat from * once (replace Pattern Sequence 5 with Pattern Sequence 6), 19 stitches Pattern Sequence 5, 4 stitches Brioche Pattern, 1 edge stitch.
For sleeve shaping, starting from the ribbing, increase on both sides 18 times in every 6th row and 6 times in every 4th row 1 stitch each = 133 stitches.
Work the first 5 increased stitches in Brioche Pattern, the remaining 19 stitches in Pattern Sequence 4.
At a height of 39 cm (15.4 inches) = 136 rows from the ribbing, bind off all remaining stitches.
Finishing:
Sew shoulder seams.
Pick up 96 stitches along the neckline with circular needles and work 3 cm (1.2 inches) in Ribbing Pattern, then bind off all stitches in pattern.
Sew side seams, leaving the upper 27 cm (10.6 inches) open for armholes.
Sew sleeve seams. Set in sleeves.
